When you are on food stamps, now called SNAP, you are given a card called the Electronic Benefit Transfer card. The EBT card acts like a debit card, allowing you to make purchases for items that are approved for purchase with your food stamps. Like a debit card you can keep track of your balance, to do that each state has a way to check your food stamp balance online or by phone.
